Levels of detail, development, definition, and information need: a critical literature review

The construction industry relies on precise building information for evaluating designs performance, collaboration, and delivery. For more than a decade, the Level of Development (LOD) is most popular concept describing progression geometric semantic across design phases. LOD domain language that aims to establish common understanding what each level means facilitate communication defining deliverables in contracts among project participants. However, multiple similar standards are published worldwide purpose, such as Detail, Definition, Information Need. although they at first glance, many cases, have numerous deviations their fundamentals. This paper investigates differences interpretation by scientific community through thorough analysis. this 58 guidelines were reviewed, systematic literature review 299 peer-reviewed publications was conducted. As result, existing trends using research widespread naming conventions specifications identified. Additionally, results highlight 16 use cases applying LOD.
